Fast track to failure? Energy transition minerals and the future of consultation and consent

Energy transition mineral and metals (ETM) are being widely discussed for their utility in combating climate change. However, contribution with respect to social environmental impact does not feature prominently contemporary debates. In this paper we present findings showing the extent which world's ETM projects will intersect Indigenous Peoples' Peasant lands – of people who under existing United Nations-level declarations have explicit consultation consent rights. Our results suggest that majority located either on or near adverse conditions human rights-compatible permitting, consultation, consent. The implications profound terms understanding basis agreed international safeguards may be diluted rush meet market demand, future supply ETMs exacerbate inequalities already vulnerable locations.
